Breast cancer is a serious health issue that affects women of all ages and ethnicities. One of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against breast cancer is self-breast examination (SBE). By performing regular SBE, you can become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts, making it easier to detect any changes that may occur. Here are some tips on how to perform a self-breast examination: 1. Choose a time: It's best to perform SBE a few days after your period ends, when your breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender. 2. Stand in front of a mirror: Look for any changes in the size, shape, or contour of your breasts. Check for any dimpling, puckering, or changes in the skin texture. Also, look for any changes in the nipples, such as inversion or discharge. 3. Raise your arms: Look for the same changes as mentioned above, but also pay attention to any swelling or lumps under your arms. 4. Lie down: Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. Use the pads of your fingers on your left hand to examine your right breast. Use a circular motion, starting from the outer edge and moving towards the nipple. Be sure to cover the entire breast and armpit area. Repeat this process for your left breast. 5. Use different pressures: Use light pressure to feel the tissue closest to the skin, medium pressure for the middle layers, and firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs. Remember, breast tissue is naturally lumpy, so don't panic if you feel some irregularities. 6. Check for nipple discharge: Gently squeeze each nipple to check for any discharge. If you notice any bloody or clear fluid, consult your doctor. 7. Repeat monthly: It's important to perform SBE every month to become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts. If you notice any changes or abnormalities, don't hesitate to contact your healthcare provider. Remember, self-breast examination is just one part of breast health awareness. It's also important to schedule regular mammograms and to seek medical advice if you have any concerns. By being proactive and taking control of your breast health, you can increase your chances of early detection and successful treatment.
